Recognizing diversity
How do you focus on developing high performance when essentials like exam prep are suffering? McCall MacBain scholars, high performers striving to become global leaders engaged in positive change, access performance coaching through the interdisciplinary leadership program as they pursue their master’s or professional degree at McGill University. And sometimes, high performers need to revisit their habits before they can focus on advancing their leadership goals.
Lisa shared this challenge with the SCP coaching team recently to review insights and consider strategies for common shared learning. First, we focused on defining the challenge: a scholar with ADHD was challenged by competing priorities and falling behind in classes, making it difficult to address leadership development as part of the McCall-McBain merit scholarship.
Then we considered what success for this young leader might look like and how to get there. We discussed the opportunity to support them with quieting negative self-talk and better aligning with their previous experiences of success to draw on their own confidence and self-worth.
We also acknowledged the diverse expertise of our coaching team to identify the neurodivergent challenges of a scholar with ADHD and access practical solutions grounded in lived experience. With an accountability partner in their corner, the scholar began to regain their academic success and focus on accelerating their leadership.
